Meeting of the working group on the development of a joint travelling exhibition on the Common Heritage along the Silk Roads

On 17 June 2019 in Nur-Sultan, the first meeting of the working group on the development of the joint exhibition on the Common Cultural Heritage along the Silk Roads took place.

The first meeting of the working group on the development of the joint exhibition was organized to select the theme/s for the exhibit; discuss its scope and nature, as well as the possible objects to be displayed at the exhibit. The participants, representing national museums of Afghanistan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan got an opportunity to share experiences, discuss opportunities and challenges and develop networking between the national museums.

The National Museum of Kazakhstan hosted the meeting of the working group in Nur-Sultan.

As a result of the meeting the following preliminary themes of the exhibition were proposed:
  • Roads of Tolerance: religious, values, historic area and ancient civilizations
  • Roads of Innovation and Discoveries: silk, paper, traditional water systems, scholars, architecture
  • Roads of Unity in Diversity: shared living traditions (ICH elements), synergies between the nomadic and urban lifestyles, images and languages of people of CA, modern interpretations of traditions in architecture and design).
It was also agreed that the International Committee for Exhibition Exchange, International Council of Museums (ICOM-ICEE) will support the exhibition promotion – the organization will present and promote the project at the ICOM annual meeting in Japan in September 2019. It will also support the development of the exhibition catalogue in English and Russian and to assist the National Museums of participating countries in their need for capacity-building – ICOM ICEE will look into the possibility of organizing webinars on themes identified by the museums.


The joint exhibition will be organized as a part of the 3 years’ EU/UNESCO project "Silk Roads Heritage Corridors in Afghanistan, Central Asia and Iran – International Dimension of the European Year of Cultural Heritage". The exhibition on the Common Cultural Heritage aims to raise awareness about the project, to showcase the rich heritage of the participating countries, to promote the exchanges of good practices along the Silk Roads and to promote common understanding about the Silk Roads heritage as a bridge between the East and the West. The exhibit will be displayed at the closure of the project in the fall of 2021 at a museum in a participating country or Europe and made available for display in each of the participating countries.
