10 September 2017

Krista Pikkat, Director of the UNESCO Cluster Office in Almaty, represented the Organization at the first Science and Technology Summit of OIC on 10 and 11 September 2017.

Delivering the Director-General’s message to the Summit participants, Ms Pikkat paid tribute to the Kazakh authorities for the successful organization of EXPO 2017 on Future Energy and the first S&T Summit of the OIC. She emphasized the importance of science for the new global agenda and the key questions all societies must tackle today – about equitable and inclusive growth, about sustainable development, about risk reduction, about ocean sustainability, about peace and better livelihoods.

“The complexity of challenges today calls for a new unity across the sciences, for strong connections between scientific and traditional knowledge, for tight linkages between science, policy and society.”

Calling for the strengthening of national capacities in science, technology and innovation everywhere, Ms Pikkat pledged UNESCO’s full support for the implementation of the OIC S&T priorities. “The Organization will bring all its expertise and networks, working with partners, to take forward the goals we share – including to support Kazakhstan in establishing an International Centre for Green Technology and Investment “Future Energy”, as follow-up to the EXPO-2017.
