A new publication, Science, Technology and Gender: an International Report has been prepared under the technical coordination of UNESCO’s Division for Science Policy and Sustainable Development. The report aims to be both a conceptual and analytical tool, and a framework for action on gender mainstreaming in science and technology.
For over thirty years, the United Nations General Assembly and the UN Economic and Social Commission have emphasized gender inequalities as well as disparities in educational opportunities, access to training and the labour market. In 2000 gender equality became one of the eight United Nations Millennium Development Goals. The report will provide policy-makers with a framework for action regarding gender, science and technology at the national and regional levels. The document is addressed to national and international scientific and academic communities, promoting the dissemination and serious discussion of gender, S&T issues.
Executive summaries of the Report have already been published in the six official languages of United Nations, i.e. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish. And it is expected that the full Report will also be published in those languages.
