Radio stations from Central Asia have participated in the radio marathon since its inception. This year Community Station Radiomost, Talas, Kyrgyzstan participated in the global marathon with its report on Radio 18-12, International Migrants Day.
For the third consecutive year, on 18 December 2008, Radio 18-12 organizing a “global radio marathon” with the support of UNESCO, on the occasion of International Migrants Day.Groups of migrants and radios from over the world will be invited to produce, broadcast and share programmes to celebrate achievements and highlight the struggles of migrants around the world.
Since 2000, the international community has indeed chosen 18 December as International Migrants Day in order to enhance their contribution to the development of their host countries and homelands, to promote their rights and to ensure their opinions are heard.
In this perspective, the first edition of a huge “radio marathon” was organized in 2006 by Radio 18-12 with the support of UNESCO. It gathered together more than 50 radio stations that broadcasted in more than 25 countries.
In 2007, the event had more impact with the participation of 152 radio stations located in 34 countries and 4 continents.
For the 2008 edition, Radio 18-12 calls over 170 radio stations from 46 countries took part in the third edition. Some stations are still broadcasting over the weekend. on even more countries, radios, migrants’ organizations and solidarity groups from over the world to participate in this initiative to increase the momentum.
