In celebration of Human Rights Day, UNESCO Almaty supported a youth-led initiative to ensure equal access to sports and physical activity among women and girls of Central Asia.
To participate in this marathon, you must register in the marathon's WhatsApp group using this link from 10 to 13 December, 2020.
Girls and women aged 16 to 60 years old are invited to participate without any contraindications to physical activity and dietary nutrition.
In the Central Asian region, there is an increase in the involvement of women and girls in sports and physical activity. However, we cannot ignore the fact that women from more vulnerable groups of the society still remain outside the sports field, citing lack of financial resources, stigmatization, lack of time due to household chores, religious and cultural aspects.
The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated this situation, and has served to develop more serious risks of insufficient physical activity among the population of the region as a whole, as a result of the introduction of quarantine measures, the closure of sports clubs and venues. Women had the hardest time, because in addition to work, they now have to combine household chores, distance learning of their children, caring for loved ones. Ans it is more and more difficult to find the time for sports and physical activity.
“Sport is one of the best ambassadors for human rights and participation. Through sports, people learn values such as fairness, tolerance, friendship and honesty. If each of us adheres to these principles, then we will forget about what a violation of human rights is” - Rustem noted.
Sports are an inalienable right of every human being and resonates not only in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, but also in the Kazan Action Plan, which also encourages the participation of women and girls in sports and physical activity.
