The role of Media and Information Literacy for Science Teaching: from a Teacher Perspective

The Global Media and Information Literacy Week thematic conference was held from 24-31 October 2022 in Paris. Dinara Sagadatova, a young researcher from Nazarbayev University, Kazakhstan and Head of the Department of Natural Sciences at Quantum STEM School, spoke at the special session "Global Conversation on Media and Information Literacy with Teachers" on 26 October.

At the session, educators from China, the Philippines, the UK and Kazakhstan shared their experiences and recommendations on how to integrate media and infographics literacy into the curricula of national education systems.

Dinara's presentation was related to the implementation of media literacy in secondary school science teaching. For example, she mentioned ways to use news media for discussions on environmental and social issues affecting the results of scientific research and inventions.

She also shared her experience in using the developed textbook "Media and Information Literacy" for grades 9-11 in the curriculum.

In addition, Dinara gave examples of school science fairs from her own practice, where students in grades 5-8 presented group animation and comic book projects with analysis of stakeholders' opinions from news websites, forecasts on statistical data from government websites, etc. Dinara concluded with recommendations for integrating journalistic texts in the teaching of biology, chemistry, and physics at school.
