6 March 2017
The Steering Committee Meeting of the International Consortium on Landslides (ICL), which was created in 2002 with the support and encouragement of UNESCO, took place in Kyoto, Japan, on 4-5 March 2017, bringing together the experts of the worldwide network on landslides.
ICL provides a unique international platform promoting landslide research for the benefit of society and the environment, capacity building and education, notably in developing countries. It coordinates international expertise in landslide risk assessment and mitigation studies, and promotes a global, multidisciplinary programme on landslides.UNESCO Almaty Office Programme Specialist Ms. Kristine Tovmasyan was invited by the Executive Director of ICL to participate and give a presentation on Central Asian region.
Among other issues, the organization of the 5-th World Landslide Forum was discussed and an organizing committee was established, composed of the representatives of ICL Steering Committee, international organizations, and national entities, such as the Japan Landslide Society, Japan Geotechnical Society, Kyoto University and others.
For the first time a discussion was held on perspectives for Central Asia to join the network and participate in a regional session during the above mentioned forum to be organized by UNESCO Almaty Office. A follow-up seminar with Central Asian research institutions and stakeholders in charge of landslide risk reduction will be held in Almaty, Kazakhstan, in May 2017.
Landslides are one of the main natural hazards facing Central Asia. However, landslide research remains underfunded and adequate monitoring and appropriate risk reduction measures are lacking in the countries of the region.
