UNESCO marked Nowruz with the countries of Central Asia and the South Caucasus

14 April 2021

This year, UNESCO has contributed to the rapprochement of cultures by promoting the common cultural heritage of the International Day of Nowruz, which marks the first day of spring and the renewal of nature in the Balkans, the Black Sea basin, the Caucasus, Central Asia, the Middle East and other regions.

The UNESCO Cluster Office in Almaty marked this day with benefit and launched an information campaign in social networks, which was aimed at raising awareness of the population from the countries of Central Asia and the South Caucasus about the cultural features of the celebration of Nowruz.

More than 330,000 people from the region were inspired by interesting facts about the traditions of preparing for this day. Learned how to cook traditional dishes such as Nauryz Kozhe , Chyz-byz , Sumalyak , Dumlyama and Sheqbura after all, they are all reflected in the cultures of various peoples.

An interesting experiment was between generations, in which grandmothers shared with their grandchildren memories of the celebration of Nowruz in their childhood, while the children had to guess what kind of dish their grandmother had prepared for them and share their impressions of how it tasted.

Also, we asked people from different cultures about what Nowruz means to them? Most of the participants associate this holiday with family, delicious food, guests, great weather and the beginning of spring.
