On 7 December 2017, a round table discussion on the development of professional standards for water sector took place in Astana, Kazakhstan. The event was organized by the Executive Board of the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea in Kazakhstan (EB IFAS) with the support of the UNESCO Cluster Office in Almaty.
The meeting was organized in follow-up to the consultations conducted in 2016, by EB IFAS with the support of UNESCO Almaty Office and other partners, to identify gaps in the national training system for water management, including the consultations with the representatives from the industry – relevant water organizations, associations and experts. Based on this work, the experts came to the conclusion that the improvement of training in the field of water resources can be achieved through the development of adequate professional standards for water sector and respective educational process.During the follow-up meeting, the invited experts and participants discussed in detail the professional standards for some water-related specialties. Based on this discussion, the professional standards will be further revised to ensure that water education meets the needs of the water sector.
