WED2021: Generation Restoration

19 July 2021

From 5 to 30 June, UNESCO and Telli Kazakhstan held a large-scale challenge for young people to restore the ecosystems of Central Asia as part of the celebration of World Environment Day.

32 teams and 192 participants aged from 14 to 23 took part in the #WakeUpToRestore Instagram contest. For 20 days, young people solved various problems to restore the ecosystems of their cities and countries. Thus, they presented more than 100 project solutions for the restoration of bee populations, rivers and reservoirs, the conservation of the Caspian seal and the promotion of sustainable agriculture.

The first place was taken by the EcoCrossing team, scoring 48 points

It is noteworthy that a mandatory condition for the registration of teams was a gender balance, so there was an equal number of girls and boys in each team.

Tik-Tok Challenge #GenerationRestoration co-organized with YLSP youth organization gained popularity in Kyrgyzstan and young tiktokers Kubatbekov Temirlan (@Faina_Utel), Moldazhanova Akzholtoy (@M.Akzholtoy) and Batkuldayeva Zharkynai (@Bakirovs13) became its winners. As part of this challenge, young participants recorded short videos on how they make a real contribution to ecosystem restoration.
