The UNESCO Asia and Pacific Regional Bureau for Education in Bangkok, the UNICEF East Asia and Pacific Regional Office and the UNICEF Regional Office for South Asia co-organized the 5th Asia-Pacific Meeting on Education 2030 (APMED2030) in Bangkok, Thailand on 1-4 October 2019.
The 5th APMED2030 elaborated solutions for achieving the Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4) to deliver inclusive and equitable quality education in the era of lifelong learning and sustainable development. Specifically, it focused on SDG4 Target 4.1 (ensure that all girls and boys complete free, equitable and quality primary and secondary education leading to relevant and effective learning outcomes) and SDG4 Target 4.6 (ensure that all youth and a substantial proportion of adults, both men and women, achieve literacy and numeracy). It also explored progress and challenges towards implementing and monitoring foundational learning and skills for all age groups. The meeting brought together approximately 250 key stakeholders from relevant organizations within and outside the Asia-Pacific region. Invited guests included government officials, international organizations, non-governmental organizations and civil society organizations in Asia and the Pacific, who are responsible for SDG 4 planning, monitoring and statistics.
The meeting consisted of technical sessions and a one-day meeting of SDG 4 National Coordinators in Asia and the Pacific. The technical sessions allowed for in-depth discussions and analyses of the capacity needs and priority action areas for different sub-regions. UNESCO Almaty moderated the Central Asian discussion. The SDG 4 National Coordinators’ Network meeting discussed the plans for the 2nd Asia-Pacific Regional Education Ministers’ Conference in 2020 and the regional five-year SDG 4 progress review, among others.
