UNESCO is pleased to invite Governments of Member States and NGOs in official partnership with UNESCO to nominate outstanding projects or programmes for the 2021 UNESCO-Japan Prize on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD).
The 2021 awards will recognise three ongoing and established projects or programmes which make a substantial contribution to one or more of the five priority action areas of the ESD for 2030 framework, with each winning entry receiving US $50,000.The UNESCO-Japan Prize on ESD honours institutions or organisations for outstanding projects or programmes undertaken in the field of ESD. The Prize also recognises the role of ESD as an integral element of Sustainable Development Goal 4 on Education, and as key enabler of all 17 SDGs.
The winner will be selected by the Director-General of UNESCO, from a shortlist of outstanding candidates prepared by an independent international jury. To be considered eligible for nomination, projects must meet the following criteria:
• be ongoing and have already been running for at least four years
• show evidence of results and high impact relative to the invested resources
• be replicable and scalable
• contribute to one or more of the five priority action areas of the ESD for 2030 framework
Entrants must be nominated by a Permanent Delegation to UNESCO from a member state, or by an NGO in official partnership with UNESCO. Self-nominations will not be accepted. Each member state or NGO can make up to three nominations.
Nominations must be submitted in English or French by midnight on 30 April 2021 ( Paris time) .

The UNESCO-Japan Prize on ESD is funded by the Government of Japan, and since its establishment in 2014, it has rewarded exceptional projects and programmes undertaken by institutions and organisations in the field of ESD. The Prize aims to generate and scale up action at all levels of education and learning, and contribute to the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.
