The International Day of Women and Girls in Science is celebrated annually on 11 February since its declaration by the UN General Assembly resolution in 2015. On 18 February 2022, UNESCO Office in Almaty organized an event dedicated to the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. The event was held online and brought together more than 80 women and girls working and interested in science from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
The meeting raised awareness about the existing initiatives and projects supporting women and girls in science and providing opportunities to encourage women in promotion of their scientific research and careers, as well as to popularize science among youth. During the event UNESCO office in Almaty provided a brief overview of global and regional data on women scientists and their fields of research, based on the UNESCO Science Report. Women scientists from Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan in the field of natural sciences and STEM education shared their experience in careers in science and gave some useful advice to young people. During the second session of the event, young girls shared their research work and future plans in the area of science.Since 2017, the UNESCO Almaty Office has been organizing the celebration of this day in order to raise awareness and empower young women and girls in science.
