Education Management Information Systems (EMIS) play an important role in improving the quality of education and are the main source of data for education planning. EMIS data can help countries to not only understand the needs of their learners, but also to implement policies and programmes that respond to those needs. As such, EMIS is much more than simply measuring and tracking education systems.
Strengthening EMIS to Monitor Sustainable Development Goals is a timely theme for governments to systematically monitor progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and more specifically SDG 4, in order to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all. This policy brief presents the challenges and opportunities that Central Asian countries face with regard to EMIS. It also highlights what it takes to build an effective EMIS ecosystem, what UNESCO is doing to help countries to track progress towards SDG 4 targets, and possible country priority actions for a better and more robust EMIS. UNESCO Almaty has issued this brief as part of Central Asian series and you can download it in English and Russian.
