On November 10, the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Tajikistan and UNESCO, represented by the UNESCO Almaty Cluster Office for Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan signed a memorandum of understanding.
The document describes close collaboration in supporting the implementation of the National Strategy for Education Development to advance the Sustainable Development Goal 4, "Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all," in Tajikistan.
We are grateful for the constant support of UNESCO in the implementation of programs and projects for the development of education in the country, and we are taking all the necessary measures for its development and expansion.
Minister of Education and Science of the Republic of Tajikistan, Mr. Rahim Saidzoda
We are ready to expand the cooperation with the Ministry in the future in the direction of developing educational programs (STEM). Our Dushanbe project regarding STEM has already passed the inception phase and will soon begin implementation.

As part of the agreement, UNESCO will support the execution of activities under the broad areas of:
- Education Policy, Planning and Monitoring to achieve SDG 4 (e.g., national coordination mechanism for SDG 4, linking to the overall SDG national coordination mechanisms; SDG 4 review, monitoring and reporting);
- Lifelong Learning, Technical and Vocational Education and Training, and Higher Education (providing a platform for political dialogue on National Qualification Frameworks and TVET policy review);
- Skills and competencies for sustainable development, global citizenship, prevention of violent extremism and healthy lifestyles (through curriculum development and enhancing teachers’ qualifications) ;
- Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in Education (e.g. developing a common curriculum for ICT development and an ICT Competency Framework for Teachers);
- Science, Math, Engineering and Technology (STEM) education
- Safety of Schools (applying UNESCO Safety Assessment Method (VISUS))
Currently, UNESCO is implementing “Strengthening competency-based and ICT-enabled STEM and VET education and teacher-training” project in Tajikistan, funded by the European Union, with a value of 7 million Euro.
The project is expected to improve overall quality of education in Tajikistan in the areas of STEM (science, technology, engineering, maths), Information and communication technologies (ICT), and vocational education and training (VET). This will result in educating future workforce with the 21st century knowledge and skills in STEM subjects and help advance country’s economic growth and competitiveness.
