Training teacher trainers in Kazakhstan for International Teachers’ Day 2019

On the occasion of the International Teachers' Day, UNESCO Almaty Cluster Office and the National Center for Professional Development "Orleu" in Kazakhstan organized a workshop on developing key competencies for the 21st century in Almaty from 2 to 4 October 2019. The event gathered 20 teacher trainers from the central administrative office and regional offices of "Orleu".

Saule Zeynolla, UNESCO Almaty Consultant, and Anar Karibaeva, Senior Lecturer of "Orleu" branch in East Kazakhstan region, facilitated the workshop. These teacher trainers are experienced in educating teachers through professional development programs throughout the country, including young teachers just starting teacher profession.

Since this year’s theme of the International Teachers’ Day focuses on young teachers as a future of profession, the training emphasized skills, which young teachers need in the 21st century and new methods for mainstreaming them in the education system.

The workshop applied an interactive format with practical exercises. It also introduced concepts of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and Global Citizenship Education (GCED) under the Sustainable Development Goal Target 4.7. ESD and GCED aim at developing students with key competencies for living and working in the 21st century and for contributing to sustainable development.

The next step after the training is to develop a training module on education for sustainable development and global citizenship for 36 hours in Kazakh and Russian, which would be used for further capacity building of teachers throughout the country.
