UNESCO cooperated with DVV International to organize the Central Asian Adult Education Forum 2019 in Kyrgyzstan on June 24-26. The Forum brought together participants from over 12 countries to raise the awareness of education experts, practitioners and decision-makers from Central Asian countries about the role of Global Citizenship Education(GCED) in lifelong learning and achieving Sustainable Development Goal 4. It also increased an understanding of successful practices on GCED in adult education from Asia and beyond.
A team of education specialists from UNESCO Almaty presented on key competencies for sustainable development and global citizenship, on the role of GCED in the prevention of violent extremism and media and information literacy for strengthening skills for sustainable development. UNESCO Tashkent also introduced its activities on GCED in Uzbekistan.As a result of three days of learning, exchanges and discussions, the participants jointly determined the relevance of GCED for adult education in Central Asia, and its applicability in the regional context. They also developed recommendations and roadmaps on strengthening the implementation of GCED within formal and non-formal education in the region. For example, in Tajikistan, the participants proposed a project to develop learning materials for adult educators. In Kyrgyzstan, the participants emphasized the role of GCED in challenging the gender stereotypes and increasing MIL skills in communities. UNESCO and DVV International are planning to collaborate further within identified areas as a priority for both organizations in the region.
