UNESCO awards leaders in promoting Education for Sustainable Development in schools of Kyrgyzstan

An online award ceremony for the winners of the competition "Best Practice on Implementing Education for Sustainable Development," within the project "Developing Online Curriculum to Mainstream Cross-Cutting Competencies for Sustainable Development in Kyrgyzstan."

Participants (teachers, school principals, Project trainers and experts) were welcomed by Ms. Zoya Pak from the Ministry of Education and Science of the Kyrgyz Republic, Ms. Krista Pikkat, Director of UNESCO Almaty, H.E. Mr Heiti Maemees, the Ambassador of the Republic of Estonia to the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, the Republic of Tajikistan, the Republic of Turkmenistan and by Ms. Gulmira Artykbaeva, the Republican Teacher Training Institute (RTTI)under the Ministry of Education and Science of the Kyrgyz Republic.
The competition was held from September 1 to November 30, 2020 among the teachers of pilot schools, who tested 5 online modules aimed at promoting and integrating Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) into school education. As part of the competition, teachers had to prepare their portfolio based on the results of piloting and shoot a video essay. 18 applications were submitted, of which 6 winners (three in each language group) were selected.

Among schools with Kyrgyz language of instruction, the following teachers were selected:
1. Berdikozhoeva Zhazgul Chymyrbekovna, secondary school ¹ 2 named after Chkalova, Naryn city;
2. Dzhumabekova Zarina Amankulovna, secondary school named after Rysmendieva, Kyzyl-Suu village, Naryn oblast
3. Sultanalieva Aisha Bormukhamedovna, school-gymnasium ¹ 2 named after Kasymbaeva, Lebedinovka village, Chui oblast

Among schools with Russian language of instructions, the following winners were selected:
1. Abdylasova Kumushai Monolovna, school-gymnasium ¹2 named after Kasymbaeva, Lebedinovka village, Chui oblast
2. Ismailova Saltanat Abdievna, school-gymnasium named after Zhundubaeva, Kochkor village, Naryn oblast
3. Toktogulova Orozbu Muratovna, school-gymnasium ¹38, Bishkek city

The winners of the «Best Practice on Integrating ESD into Teaching» competition received certificates, laptops and the training opportunity at the Laboratory of Innovative Projects (Belarus). In addition, all teachers and their students received a badge confirming membership in the global community of teachers to promote ESD. Besides, some teachers received their professional development training certificates issued by the Republican Teacher Training Institute under the MoES.
The Project is implemented by UNESCO Almaty in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Science of the Kyrgyz Republic and with financing from Estonia since 2019. Currently, the Phase-2 is being implemented by EdNet Agency. It is planned to finalize the modules early next year and submit to MoESD for further scale-up with other schools in the country, while the RRTI will use the modules in their in-service ESD teacher training programmes.
