10 December 2020

From 11 to 19 November 2020, 16 representatives of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Kyrgyz Republic (MOES), Kyrgyz Academy of Education (KAE), pre-service and in-service teacher training institutes and other stakeholders participated in technical-level workshop on developing ICT competencies for teachers. The new standards will be aligned with the vision, goals, and ICT in Education Master Plans in education sector.

These national standards will guide the development of a comprehensive roadmap that promotes competency-based teacher ICT training programmes where teachers’ development is systematically guided, monitored, assessed, and tracked at policy and institutional levels.

The development of ICT competency standards for teachers (ICT-CST) was based on the findings of the analysis of the current status of teachers’ ICT competencies in light of existing ICT in Education policies. During the workshop participants have engaged in discussions and reflections regarding national education system, core guiding policies and plans, self-evaluation of the issues and challenges that the country has been facing in integrating ICT in education. They have also discussed teacher context and the approach that will be used for developing ICT-CST, reviewed promising cases and diverse approaches to developing ICT Competency Standards for Teachers from different countries in Asia-Pacific Region.

Participants found the workshop extremely useful and relevant, and the materials and samples to be helpful. They identified the priority areas for integrating ICT, gained skills on developing ICT competency standards and performance indicators.

As result of the online workshop, participants identified and drafted domains, competency standards and corresponding performance indicators for pre-and in-service teachers, as well as developed work plan for follow-up activities. They agreed to conduct public consultations in the next couple of months with relevant stakeholders to prepare the draft ICT competency standard for endorsement by the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic.

UNESCO's initiative on developing ICT competency standards is implemented to support the Ministry of Education and Science in its response to the COVID-19 crisis.
