HIV Prevention Information Kit for School Administrators and Teachers in Kazakhstan Published

18 April 2008

The Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan has issued an information education kit on HIV prevention for school administrators and teachers. The kit was adapted and produced with the technical and financial support of UNESCO.

Prior to the publication of the kit, an adaptation workshop took place on 17-18 May 2007 at the National in-service teacher training institute.

During the workshop, educational experts representing 14 regions of Kazakhstan and HIV/AIDS specialists discussed the kit, originally developed by the UNESCO Regional Office in Bangkok. Workshop participants gave recommendations for adapting the kit for Kazakhstan. Rosanne Wong, representative of UNESCO Bangkok, presented the kit to the workshop and moderated the discussion on adaptation.

The kit contains information on various HIV and AIDS issues; the impact of the epidemic on families, communities and schools; the role of schools in response to the epidemic; preventive education and international commitments. In addition, the kit has theme sheets devoted to population groups most vulnerable to HIV: women and girls, injecting drug users and orphans and vulnerable children.

Workshop participants agreed that the information kit contains essential information needed by managers and school teachers for preparation of effective lessons on HIV prevention among young people.

Under the leadership of the Ministry of Education and Science of Kazakhstan, the working group has adapted and will distribute the kit at workshop and conferences.
